Hi,

I need to travel internationally 2 days after my oath ceremony. Can I fly using my Indian passport after taking the oath ceremony or would that be illegal.

I would assume that it will take at least a week to get new US passport after oat ceremony. What are my options?

Would appreciate input from the expert

Once you become a U.S. citizen, you'll be required by law to use a U.S. passport when leaving and entering the U.S. Moreover, at the naturalization oath they'll take away your green card and you won't be able to enter the U.S. using your indian passport anyway.

You should schedule an appointment at the nearest passport agency for the day after your naturalization oath:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/agencies/agencies_913.html

Then you'll get a U.S. passport issued to you on the same day you apply for it (you'll need to bring proof of your travel plans to the passport agency).

If scheduling an appointment at a passport agency for the day after the naturalization oath is not practical, you should either postpone the oath (the oath letter explains how) or change your travel plans.

Your Indian passport will also be invalid as you will automatically lose Indian citizenship as soon as you naturalise as a US citizen.

You can get same day US passport. But you need visa /OCI to visit India. OCI takes about 3-5 months. Visa about 5 to 15 days. You have to renounce Indian citizenship and cancel Indian passport. Even though it is technically possible to get visa on arrival at Indian port, i would not venture for it.

The best option is to postpone your journey. If same not possible postpone oath ceremony till after your return.

Don't attempt to use your Indian passport, you will be detained in India.

Even though you lose Indian citizenship automatically, it is required to be regularized by renounciation certificate issued by Indian embassy and cancellation of Indian passport. It takes time. In extreme emergency they do it across the counter. Not otherwise.

I know that is required, but it need not be done immediately if the OP is not going to India on this trip. It can be done when he/she returns if the trip is international, and not to India.

Question, how will India know if you have acquired citizenship? I don't think the USCIS takes away your indian passport nor do they notify the Indian embassy when you naturalize, so why not keep both passports?

You can fly back to India and then just live there after that or maybe travel through a 3rd country (i.e US to Turkey and then Turkey to India) that doesn't require a visa for Indian nationals prior to entering India. I think this will help hide your dual citizenship

You should be mad planning something like that. If you hide your US PP and try to enter Indian port with your Indian PP, what happens when the Immigration Official asks you for your GC. Your GC is not with you as it is taken away at the oath ceremony. The flight manifest may show you as an US citizen. You will be in serious trouble.

Having an Indian Passport without GC you can't leave out of India. You can't use your US PP as it has no entry stamp. If you plan to return to US via Turkey, assume you are able to get a visa for Turkey from India. Your arrival stamp will be in the Indian PP. Your US PP will have no entry stamp in Turkey. That will pose a problem to catch a US flight. Don't even think you are smart.
