Need practical advise- spouse name change

Folks, I need a practical advice.

Myself and spouse are scheduled for citizenship interview in Chicago in mid January. We would like to do a minor change in the spelling in her last name. However, the following is our situation.

I urgently need USC status so I do not want to cause any delay on getting my papers. Her case is bit different, she will eventually need it too, however, 1-2 month delay is not a big deal in her case.

What is the best way forward ? Possible options:

A. Do not change spelling of her name via interview process. Do it post factum after she gets citizenship papers.
B. She requests a change during interview....and hopefully, if it is delay, it will only impact the timing of Oath Ceremony. I assume that unless we request they will not try to do our Oath in the same day

Also, what is the process for Option A ...how long it will take to do a minor name change to the spelling of her last name (basically we will drop one letter at the end to make same as mine) on our own after obtaining citizenship ? Forum members with a similar experience, please share your experience.

Thanks...Wishing you all great and very successful New Year.

The two cases are processed separately. A delay in hers due to name change will not delay your own.

B is the better choice if she does not mind a 1-2 month delay for the oath. Whereas if she went with choice A, she would have to expend the effort and money to deal with whatever court process is applicable for name change in her jurisdiction.

Thanks Jack. Are you saying that we have to go back to her country origin for Option A ?
No, that would be done via the local court system in the US. But if she is going to keep her original citizenship in addition to obtaining US citizenship, she may also have to follow another process via her country's consulate to get her non-US passport changed.

Could Dream send out a letter now since there is more than a month till the interview? This might progress the name change faster, but not sure if they will process the letter fast enough.

All, thanks for your suggestions and advice...

Folks, we are less concerned about the country of origin at this point....

sanjoseaug20, what letter are guys talking about ? Follow-up for non-US passport...?

My last post was to Jack since he had some good ideas on this. To rephrase

You want to change your wife's last name but her application is already in progress. The interview is in 2 weeks (I mis-read earlier as Feb, so that does change the scenario). I was wondering whether you could request a name change right now by sending a letter to CIS, rather than waiting for interview. If this were practical, any name check can start now rather than at the interview.

However, given that the interview is in 2 weeks, I do not think they will process any letter / request before then. So just go to the interview and request the name change there.

sanjoseaug20, i see now. thanks for clarifying...I would not mind sending a letter...too..not sure, I would send to DO -local office or filing address.
