I changed my status from f1 to j1. My wife is having an appointment at chennai for j2. Is it necessary for me to get visa stamp at one of consulates, before she attends interview, or just change of status approval papers are enough. Appreciate any input, thanks.

If you travel with her, you will need a J1 stamp to re-enter the US.

While I never had a J2 dependent, I believe all she needs is your DS-2019 with her as a dependent. But give her a copy of your approval notice for the COS (which I believe has you new I94 in the lower right corner).

Again, this is not authoritative advice. But just judging from how these visas are usually issued I wouldn't anticipate a problem.
