Need Info on RRP

I landed in Canada in November 2001 and I currently work in U.S on H1B. I have to land in Canada again(183 day rule). But instead of landing I am thinking of applying for RRP.

I am thinking of applying for Returning Resident Permit. I wanted to know if immigration officials need my passport in order to apply for RRP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
