My wife has a green card but we have been living outside of the US for several years. We have been able to get her in via the re-entry permit but this time she brought her most recent one (that had expired 9 months ago; another long story, we were erroneously told by CIS that it did not have to be renewed until a full calendar year).
Well, she was taken aside at the airport CBP and given a paroled inspection (30 days).
Doing some research on this subject has put the fear of God in me and I am worrying that she would lose the green card (please, no snarky comments about "make up your mind where to live"), but more worried that if she does lose it she would be summarily refused entry (we have tickets back in a couple of weeks), and even more worried that if she lost the card it would be impossible to reapply.
Also, I am perplexed, somewhat, by this system that is more or less designed to keep immigrants out of the country simultaneously tries to keep said immigrants inside the country once they have a green card.
Anyway, what is the worst case scenario for this paroled inspection, or what is likely to occur?
The main reason we left the US after she had the green card was to care for her sick mother, now the kids are stuck in good schools -- but I CERTAINLY want us to return to the US soon, and would prefer not to go through the green card application process again.
Any help and non-snarky answers would be a big relief right now, as I am about to die of anxiety.
