The deal here is: One of my friend got his SSN card several month ago and stored in somewhere that he can not find now - He does not even remember the number.

The question is: Is there a way to retrieve the SSN and get a new card ordered?

Thanks,

Go to the local SSA office. They should be able to help.

Can he get a replacement card after losing his job? He left US after lost his job and now he comes back with a visitor visa?

This makes this different. If he just needs the number for tax purposes, does he have any old paystubs?

Visa, loss of job etc has nothing to do with SSN. Go to the local SSA office and state your case- get a replacement card.

Well, as stated before, he is back in US now. The question is: he need to show ID and proof of needs of SSN when requesting a replacement card. Will that be a problem? We are just trying to get as much information before we go to the SSA office, so we will be prepared.

Thanks,

Visa status has nothing to do with SS Card. SSA will re-issue the card- after veryfying/authenticating. Typically there is no concept of getting a new SSN -> this could lead to fraud. Some people tried to get new SSN# and failed- the old # is re-issued.

If he had a SSN earlier he should be on a VISA (H1 etc). then why did a come on a Visitor Visa.

SSN office asks for proof like PP or DL to issue a replacement card.
you can go to the ssa.gov site for details.
(how evidence of your U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status if you were born outside the U.S)
