One of my friend applied for asylum in 2002. He was interviewed by Immigration officer and IO told him to get the decision in mail within 15 days. But he never received any correspondence from immigration after that. But he received I-797C, Notice of Action from INS today to get the fingerprints.

It says "Completeion of background identity and security checks is required in order to process your application"

Does it mean his asylum application will be approved after this background and security clearance or they can still deny it??

Please share if anybody have similar experiences.

Hi,
My aunt has almost the same experience - she was interviewed in fall 2003 and in 15 days got recommended approval and after that we didn't receive anything from INS. Yes, they can deny your asylum application if they find "derrogatory information" about you - I don't know what they mean by this. We are visiting San Francisco asylum office almost every friday and as usual there is no information about her case - it is still pending.
Did your friend got recommended approval?

He didn't get recomended approval or any other letter except this letter for fingerprints. He had his fingerprints before asylum also. This is kind of confusing because we never heard this kind of situation before.
