Hello! I am an American citizen, and my boyfriend of over a year is a French citizen. He came to america almost 4 years ago on a student exchange program. He then filed for a student visa and started attending the same junior college as I was. However, he was no longer able to pay for his schooling after 3 semesters so he stopped going and his visa expired.
He did not leave the country though, becuase he was trying to find a way to get money to stay in school (ie family, loans....) but before he could find the money, he was arrested and "removed". He was held at a federal detention facility for 3 months, and then sent back to his country (Guadeloupe, an over-seas department of France located in the Caribbean). All he has from the immigration court is a paper that has checkd off "the respondent/applicant was ordered removed from the US to Guadeloupe or in the alternative to France.". And at the bottome of all the options to check, is other and they have checked that off and wrote "respondent advised as to consequences of illegal reentry".
While he was being held, i tried to get in contact with his deportation officer and was successful only once. She told me that he is banned from America for ten years! She said that's what happens to ANYONE who is deported. But reading online, I feel (as does my boyfriend) that she may have just said that.
My question is this: how do i find out EXACTLY how long he is banned? I'm currently staying with him in Guadeloupe right now, and if this is true, and he is banned, we're looking to go to back to school in France together, but he would much rather go back to America, as would I.
If anyone could tell me ANYTHING, I would be ever so grateful. I feel as though I have no answers, and no way of finding out.
Thank you so much for reading & responding!
