Need clarification of "Axx xxx xxx" on I-797c

Folks I just received a copy of the 797 receipt notice for our (wife and I) 485/765/131 .

I notice that all the documents have a number in following format "AXX XXX XXX" in the top right "Applicant" block (Just above the name of applicant).

Recently I had my H1 extended for 3 years (6 + 3) based on an approved 140. The same 797 approval doc carried the same set of numbers for me but not for my wife.

1. What does this number stand for ?
2. Is it an Alien number or Visa Number
 
That's the alien registration number (or 'A' number). This is allocated once your immigrant petition (or I-140) is approved. Of course the same number will be used for all petitions with USCIS.

Thsi si not to be confused with the Visa number as the latter is allocated once the I-485 is approved.

the other thing I realized while completing the 485 checklist from the attorney is my A# on 140 is same as the A # on my F1 OPT which I got after completing my masters. Looks like once an A # is issued, the same # gets carried to the 140 application.
