Need advise on renewing a Canadian passport

My I485 is still pending at VSC (RD Sept 01) and my Canadian passport will expire in this Sept. The passport can't be renewed in US. I was told that I have to reapply a new passport which Since I don't want to send my original documents via courier/mail, I am thinking of going back to Canada to apply personally. Can anyone please let me know how long it takes to reissue a new passport in Canada? Your advise/comment is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Should be quick

Last time I applied for a passport in Canada was about 6 years ago. At that time if you could show a plane ticket when applying then they would issue the new passport by the next day. This was in Toronto. I have no idea whether this is still true. You may want to call and ask. Why not apply by mail. I did that a couple of months ago and had my passport back in a few weeks.
