Need advice: sick family in Canada/passport being renewed

I would appreciate any advice you can offer. I'm a Canadian citizen working for the University of Colorado on an H1b (I-485/AOS filed since last Dec., still pending). Yesterday I went to the Post Office and mailed my passport renewal package to Ottawa (which means I sent my current valid passport), and when I got home I received a call that my grandmother in Canada, who is 92, had a heart attack this morning. She is in the ICU, and her prognosis at this time isn't clear, but isn't great. In the event of her death, is there any way I can return to Canada for her funeral without my passport. I'm more concerned about re-entering the US without a current passport than I am about being able to enter Canada. I kept my I-94 and H-1b approval notice, and I have my previous passport, and I can probably find a photocopy of my current passport. My Canadian birth certificate was also mailed in the package, but I can probably find a copy of that too, if necessary. Any advice or experience on this topic would be appreciated.

This is a canadian issue(i.e. getting a temporary passport to enable you to visit gran - even visiting her at ICU). I suggest approaching the nearest canadian embassy and take some remedial, precautionary measures.
