Need a QUICK ANSWER about RE Permit

Hello...I need some help. My husband is going to change his address (and me) like license, mail, etc to our new place. Hopefully we do this tomorrow. NOW, he also needs to reapply for a reentry permit since he we are planning to travel next week. Hoping to do the RE Permit tomorrow as well since he has to travel again very shortly.

My question is this~
How will that work? He can change chis residence (A-11) tomorrow so should he also fill out the RE permit for the new address OR should he just fill out the RE permit tomorrow with the old address and do the change the address a few days later? I just wonder if this will be a logistical nightmare if there are 2 changes in one day (residence and RE permit).. Can USCIS manage this or one will get processed 'wrong'? Any thoughts.?

Thanks in advance...V

ALSO..I might has well ask this too. I think we will be travelling in and out of the US for extended times over the next 1 year +so the attorney suggested getting a RE permit. We will not be out of country for more than the 6 months at one time at all...more lke weeks..BUT..I am wondering why she is saying to do that really-she mentioned something about it giving one more step to keeping your ties here or something or the intent...

Just wondering opinions about that if one knows there will be MORE travel and spending more time out f the US but NOT in huge gaps of time..

Thanks just wondering thoughts..

The permit is not necessary for your situation, but it can help to reduce the hassles at the port of entry ... show the permit and they'll rarely bother you about traveling too much.

But remember that one must be in the US when USCIS receives the application, and then return to the US a few weeks later for fingerprinting.

Make sure to apply for the permit using the new address. Change of addresses mid-stream can delay or mess up the process. AR-11 is processed separately; you don't need to wait for the AR-11 to be processed in order to file for the reentry permit with the new address.

JAck..thank you ..But to clarify are you saying that if we were leaving next week, (tues) we cannot therefore send in the RE PErmit since it has to be RECEIVED by USCIS BEFORE we leave? IT would never get there by Tues if i mail it out Fri/Monday...I did not know that part..I only know you need to apply BEFORE you leave. I was thinking to mail it out on Monday and we should be home in October again, of if the biometrics appt comes before that just come home earlier. Is there alot of time between notification and biometrics as well?

Still thinking of getting the RE permit as that time out could equal about 8 months in the year....even though multiple trips. Of course this all depends on health issues as well for family that we are dealing with.

Also, in inspecting change of address form, I see that there is a spot for a temporary address and for how long expected to be there? What is the purpose of hthat if you are changing your main address?

Please advise..quickly if possible..TX

USCIS considers the application filing date to be the date they receive it. So you must be in the US when they receive it. If they realize you were out of the US on that date, they will deny it. And even if they approve it, they can void it if they later found out you were outside the US on the receipt date.

So if you can't be in the US on that date, apply for it another time, like in October when you'll be here again.

The temporary address thing is not applicable to you. It is only for people who are moving to a temporary address, like those who are staying in a hotel or with a friend for a few weeks when they initially relocate to a new city, before moving into their own new apartment or house.

Thanks alot for the heads up about the receiving date...vs mail out date. That I did not realize....Therefore will just do license, etc today.

Do you use the RP as a travel document? If you don't then you can send in your old one as it is not required to be shown when you leave the country.

Well he has never had a RE permit yet. I assumed that you use the GC still as a travel document even if you have the permit-but now I see otherwise. I thought the permit was an internal record kind of thing they just have on record.

So further now...are you saying that once you have a RE permit you now show that each border crossing instead of GC? There is alot on this board to learn..thanks.

JAck..I am actually not sure I agree hat the address thing would not apply to me (temporary). Because it says address for how many YEARS/MONTHS. If it were just hotel/friend they would not put it for so long agreed?

As I said I am 'moving' and renting out my own house and relocating to another state (only to also be in and out of the US due to FIL really being extreme terminal) to be close to my daughter's treatments when we are in the US.... When this is all over, I probably will go back to my house I own in the next 2 years....Unfortunately, I don't have the crystal ball to know if it will take that long but for some reason 2 years is a magic # with her condition...

There are extended temporary arrangements; for example, an architect overseeing a 2-year construction project and the company put them in an extended stay hotel close to the building site for the duration of the project.

You're waaaay overthinking this and diving into the realm of too much information. Ultimately, AR-11 is just about USCIS having a way to contact you for your benefit (or for your deportation, if it comes to that). Don't dive into all sorts of subtleties about temporary vs. permanent when you don't have to. For now, you're a NY resident and leave it at that. If/when you move back to FL, file another one to reflect your FL address. That's it.

LOL..Not overthinking it for us personally ...I am in the wrong field. I ask too many questions b/c I like to learn:) Thanks!
