My basic questions for L1 to H1
I came to US last year on L1 through India based Software company on a year long assignment, which is going to be over this winter.
After coming here, I liked America a lot and I want to stay here longer. I am ready to spend time/money and take risks to get a Green Card here. I am very novice in the details of GC, but started going through internet sites to get some details. Now, I need detailed information how to go ahead on this.
My specific questions are:
1. If I want to switch a job to a company which will sponsor green card for me, what I need to do. What sites I have to look for. I went to monster.com, I see lots of job matching my proflle, but how to know if they will sponsor GC for me. Also, when I apply, do I need to indicate somewhere that I am on L1 and I will require them to process my H1.
2. If I find a company who will sponsor H1 visa and GC for me, do I need to go back to India to get the visa stameped or can I get it all done here. What is the "change of status" they talk about. Is it some thing which can be done for L1 to H1 if I get a company?
3. Is it legal to apply for a job here, while I am on L1.
4. Does the time I was here on L1 will be counted for calculationg 6 years. I heard that it will be counted, but just wanted to make sure?
6. How much time, it will take for H1 processing? how much expenses are involved?
