ND and RD

Take your I-485 notice and look at the upper left hand area of that sheet. You should see the RD (Receipt Date) and ND (Notice Date) listed in two little boxes.

The "Receipt Date" is the date that your application was physically received in the INS mailroom. The "Notice Date" is the date that the case was entered into the CLAIMS system. CLAIMS refers to this date (the ND) as the receipt date, so there's a lot of confusion among INS folks between the two.

In most cases, the two are only 2-3 days apart, so that doesn't make much of a difference. Around 9/11/01 (not just 9/11 related, the INS switched mailroom contractors) the dates can be up to two months apart (like my own) because stuff just sat in the mailroom.
