i applied for the citizenship a couple of months ago and now im waiting for my interview. i was just wondering whether the test is during the interview or before. and also i have the booklet and it is just a bunch of questions with answers and description to each answer. do i just need to know the answer or do i have to know the description as well

In my case, the interview was before the "test" but this might vary from office to office.

You only need to know the specifric answers to each question; you are not expected to memorise the background material.

The real test in dealing with the USCIS is the "test of patience".

Just learn the questions and the answers. However, you might consider it a chance to learn some US history. I read two books as part of my "preparations" - they didn't help me (my questions were the normal "how many stripes" stuff), but they added to the experience.
