Folks,
For carrying tax documents for the last 5 years - what do people take for the interview? Do you take the tax transcripts from IRS (which are obtained by filling 4506T) or do you get the IRS 1722 letter?

I only needed the previous 3 years and since I could only find 2 of them, I phoned up the IRS number and got them to send me their forms instead. Not sure if 1722 is what it's called now or not. I know when I got my interview letter, they had the old name for the form on there. The IRS told me its a new name but they should be able to figure out what you need. Just tell them previous records of your tax filings. Or do it over the internet like I did as well (got two sets of them)

I brought in my set for my interview and he didn't even look or ask about them, he just asked did you file your taxes since you've been here, I said yes, and he moved on. So they may not even want to see them, just depends...

Use the 4506T for requesting tax transscipts. Form 1722 does not exist anymore. The tax transcripts are enough. Generally you get the about 4 years worth of tax transcripts by using 4506T. This is usually enough for Interview. My personal recommendation do NOT order copies of previous tax returns (by using 4506) and paying $39.00 for each.

We did not take any tax papers because that section which says bring last 5 yrs returns is for people who have been out of US for 6 months. We were not asked for them and all I was asked was if I was at the same job.

Tax Transcripts are enough evidence to show that you have paid all Taxes.

I order on phone for last 5 yrs. Real snooth process. I received them within 2 wks. Transcripts are free of charge.

I was not asked for any supporting documents during the Interview. That does not mean that Officer will not ask.

You should be prepared to show evidence on any thing you say mention on the N-400. When yo said you paid all the taxes on N-400, Officer has every right to ask you to prove. For that particular question, Tax Transcripts for last 5 years are adequate.

I have copies of all the tax returns I filed for last 5 years. Is that good enough or do I need to get IRS tax transcripts for $39 each,

I got the 3 year (I think) free transcript and brought copies of 5 yrs of 1040s. It never came up at the interview.

You can't get tax transcripts for 5 years. It is available for only the current tax year and 3 past years. So, depending on the date of your call, you may get either 3 years or 4 years of tax transcripts.

The short of it is that you need last the 5 yrs. returns and they don't have to be official transcripts from the IRS. Mine were just copies that my CPA gave me. They weren't even notarized.

If you are getting your USC by way of work sponserd GC, then yes I guess you do need a 5 year tax history. I was on a marriage based GC so I only needed 3 years, even though I've got my records dating back for about 7 years...
