Naturalization interview

Hello all,
I just had my naturalization interview (Boston) and I¡¦d like to share my experiences with everyone who may be interested.

Applied: July 2003
Finger Print: August 2003
Interview Notice: December, 2003
Interview: April 2004
Oath: May 2004

I arrived about 30 minutes prior to my appointment and waited in the waiting room. My interviewer called my name 15 minutes after my scheduled appointment and we proceeded to her office. She was extremely nice and polite the whole time, and she basically just went through my answers in the N-400 form.

During the interview, I provided her with a letter from Selective Service (I was not required to register), as well as copies of my speeding tickets. She mentioned that it was a good thing that I listed those in my N-400 application because it made things a little easier (transparency, I presume?) for them. She then asked me 10 questions, all of which came from the Guide to Citizenship.

After the interview, she gave me a letter and checked the ¡§Congratulations¡¨ box! She then asked me to wait in the waiting area for my oath letter. After waiting for about 20 minutes, they provided me with a letter requesting that I appear for the oath ceremony in May. I was so excited then (still am)!

Overall, it was a rather pleasant experience. My interviewer was very nice, but all the other interviewers there seemed really nice as well. I¡¦ll post again after my oath.

Congratulation

Congratulation Gabby. Hang tight, you are almost there. I remember our time line was almost same, PD 7/03, NYC. I am sitll waiting for the interview. Hoping that this waiting period will end soon. Anyway, wish you all the best. Dont' forget to share your oath exp.

Congratulations Gabby!

What documents besides green card, letter from selective service and speeding tickets did you show to the interviewer (passport? drivers license? tax returns?)?

Thanks.

hi prusa,

I did show her my passport as well. You might also want to have your social security card and driver's license ready.

Although she did not ask for proof that I have been paying my taxes, I had that ready too. My suggestion is to bring everything. I had a huge folder of documents with me when I went for the interview.

Congratulations! Did she check your passport to verify your travel records as on the N-400 form?

btw, How did you obtain your green card initially?

She did not check my passports to verify the travel dates, but I have heard of cases where the interview does conduct spot checks.

I obtained my green card through employment and I stayed with them for about a year after receiving my green card approval.

Gabby2001,

good to see a participation from Boston area....my husband is scheduled for an interview in July at Boston so I was looking for some information.

Could you please explain what is that letter from Selective Services? how do we get that?

thanks

Thanks for your reply fitness99.

Even though he is not required to register as he entered US after 26 .. does he still need to get the status letter??

If the interview letter asks for it (Status Information Letter)...Yes

It is a good idea to have some proof, e.g. I-94 etc as evidence that your husband entered the US after 26. He can always get a SIL (Status Information Letter) from SSS.

In my case I entered the country before 26, but remained in a lawful non-immigrant status until after 26. I sent the required documentation to SSS to get an official letter, saying that I am not required to register for Selective Services.

Hello sub123,

It is always a good idea to be prepared with all the documents, even if the interview letter did not ask for it. The interviewer can basically ask for any information that he or she wants.

If your husband's interview is in July, then he still has plenty of time to contact SSS to get a letter from them. I was not required to register either, but was still asked for proof that it was the case.

GABBY2001...

Gabby2001...Did the interviever ask you any questions or did you get the impression she dwelled on how long you stayed with your employer after GC?

I am changing jobs 2 mo.s after GC and curious to know if it will be an issue....

I was not specifically asked how long I stayed with the employer after receiving my green card. However, she did check the date when I received my green card approval, as well as my whole employment history in the N-400 application.

Gabby2001,

thanks for your information on selective service. When is your oath scheduled, I mean how many days from your interview date..

thanks

The oath is scheduled approximately 5-6 weeks after my interview. From talking to 2 of my other friends who were recently naturalized (Chicago and Cleveland), they were both sworn in around the same time frame after their respective interviews.

PRUSA,

You are required to list all your employers in the last 5 years in the N-400 application. However, she did ask me for my titles as well during the interview.

Hi Gabby,
I heard that you have to fill out some questionaries after submitting the NOA ( Notice of Action / interview letter ) and before interview. If this is correct, and if you remembered those questions, would please state them. Thanks

Choyty

I didn't need to fill in any questionnaires while waiting for the interview. We do, however, need to answer some short questions in the oath letter (basic stuff like have you been out of the country since the interview, etc...) and submit that at the oath ceremony.
