Filed N-400 with TCS. Local office is Memphis.

received date: 05/2003

priority date: 05/2003

FP: 10/03

Interview: June 04

Interview went well. Very nice immigration officer. The officer estimated 2-3 months for Oath letter..

12 min interview.. Studied from the 100 questions off the USCIS Web site..

The Officer worded the civics/government questions in a slightly different way than what was printed on my study sheet..

I was sworn in as a US Citizen on July 15th 04 in Knoxville TN. There were about 175 of us. It was both a moving and wonderful experience.

For those who want the interview details I have waited until everything was completed.

I arrived at the MEMPHIS office at 1220 for a 1300 appointment. Parking was easy the, security guard was efficient. i went upstairs to a spacious waiting area and dropped my letter in the box. I am glad I brought some magazines with me as there is nothing to do in there except stare at the ceiling. Right on the dot at 1300 I was called into the Adjudicators office. I was sworn in, and proceeded to go over my app. Rather straight forward. Just asked me a few questions on the app. Marriage details, children etc. i have noticed a great debate on this forum about speeding tickets. I included mine, just one from 6 years ago. I had kept copies of the ticket and the postal order I had used to pay for it. The officer didn't seem particularly interested in it. The officer just checked it off on the app. and moved on. Selective Service was not an issue as I had complied with the law and registered. the officer did not ask me about it. The only thing i was concerned about was the travel outside the US. I am commercial pilot and travel frequently outside the US. Sometimes my passport is stamped, sometimes it is not. The officer asked me quite a few questions in this area, as I have no travel documentation ie airline tickets. I brought some of my aircraft releases to show the officer some of the trips. The officer was satisfied and we moved on. That was about it. I was a little concerned about being a pro pilot inlight of the events of Sept 11. I do not know if my app was scruntinized more than others. i guess i shall never know. I got the impression it was not an issue. More of interest to the offcer than anything else.
After the app. we moved onto the English/Civics portion. I just studied the 100 questions from the USCIS website. No I did not have to recall the original 13 states. The officer asked me about 10 questions, had me write a small sentence and I was done. The officer and I chatted for about 10 mins about the service, politics and my flying job. I was done. The actual interview was about 10-15mins.
I was granted LPR status back in 92 through marriage. I did not use an attorney.. I used this forum quite a bit. thanks to all those who helped me through. I had no issues. The immigration Officer in MEM was very pleasnt, cordial and professional as were the folks at the Natz ceremony. I wish the same could be said for the Customs and border agents i encouter frequently. perhaps they will be a little more friendly when I hand them my US passport.
If anyone wants more details let me know

PS The OATH letter came 10 days after the interview

Congrats!

Thanks for the summary, it was very helpful. My experience with the BCIS has also been very pleasant; I have found their staff to be friendly also.

My interview is in four weeks, and I'm looking forward to it, although, I'm not sure what to expect with the interview questions, I'm kind of apprehensive.

Knoxville? Memphis has no court for swearing in Ceremony? Knoxville is way far from Memphis. Why is this change of place?

Don't sweat it. I know, easier said than done. Study the 100 questions from the USCIS website. I was asked about 10 questions from the 100 questions that are posted on the USCIS Website.

Since you have so many trips, how do you list them on the N-400? Do you list by your best knowledge or you had record of all?

I just went to my flt logbook which is a record of all the cities I fly to.
Last year when I filled out my N-400 I realized that this might be an issue so I started to have the Immigration agents on both ends stamp my passport. If it was less than 24hrs I made a little note in my passport so i could keep track of it all. I also took some documentation of the flights I go on, as broad illustration of my work.
The agent for my interview quizzed me about my travel. IMHO I think they are looking to see if what you have put down on the app is truthful and makes sence. As soon as she realized what i do for a living she bsically moved on.

Joe... Don't ever say you are only a private pilot. You have achieved something many only dream of. The next time you look at a commercial/corporate jet there is a good chance that one of those pilots was only a private pilot once.
