Naturalization and divorce

Hi guys,

One of my friends needs an advise:
She obtained her 10yr green card through marriage. However, things did not work with her American spouse, and they got divorced. It has been more than 2 years since they got divorced, and right now she is hoping to file for naturalization now. So, here are the questions she needs help with:

1. Filed for divorce/got separated about 5-6 months after obtaining 10yr green card (conditions removed)

2. Divorce finalized about 1 year after obtaining 10year green card

3. Has lots of documentation (copies) to prove that the marriage was bona fide (in good faith), such as bills, bank statements, car title, insurance.

4. During the interview if the question on marriage/divorce comes up, does she need to show proof of marriage pre- or post- 10 green card approval? What does she need to take with her to the interview in terms of evidence?

Has anyone went through similar situation or knows someone who did or is going through now?
thanks in advance

She'll need to bring the divorce decree to interview. She shouldn't have any issues since she separated after conditions were removed.

thank you,
if someone has a divorce decree from another country in non-English language,
does s/he need it just to get translated only? or something else?

Yes, they'll need to get it translated. However, if the person is fluent in both languages they can translate it themselves with a statement that they are fluent in both languages and certify the translation to be accurate and true.

i think their divorce was pretty bitter, and they dont talk to each other anymore, for more than a year now.
she is afraid that he could do something to hurt her status by telling lies or something like that. can he do that even there was more than two years since they got divorced?

He could say whatever he wants, but it's irrelevant at this point. I assume he's out of the picture so how would he come to know she applied for naturalization?

One lawyer told her that when she applies for naturalization, they could call her ex husband to ask questions whether the marriage was in good faith, even though it has more than two years since they got divorced. As someone who read lots of stories here on this forum, have you ever heard anything to happen, Bob?

USICS can investigate anything. However, that doesn't mean that whatever ex-husband tells them will be used against her.
