National passport debate (part 2)

NP and GC

A permanent resident who can't or just doesn't want to renew his national passport can obtain a RTD, which is valid for 1 year. A reentry permit is valid for 2 years, but is supposed to be used only if the PR is gong to be out of the US for over 1 year.

Asylees can only use RTD.

I just renew my RTD but when I got it ( less than a Month) back in the mail, I realized that I got a RP because when you became GC holder you can't get a RTD anymore. My RP is valid for 2 years. Also I went to Uk 2 uk ago for work, and When I came back the IO only checked my GC and I showed him my NP because another IO told me that I don't need to use my RP beacuse I am GC Holder.
At this point I believe that we only need to have RTD or RP if you can't renew our NP, in my case my NP is still valid to 2013. in 2010 I am going to apply to get my citizenship! and have and US passport!:)

Hi dfvm,

I am about to leave for Europe for a wedding and I did apply for a travel document but I still have not received it (it has been more than 2 months now). :( I DO have a GC (got it in early 2006) and I have finally renewed my NP recently due to the long wait for my RP and not wanting to miss the wedding of my best friend's (I had already bought the tickets, booked hotel, etc).

Just FYI, I did not have a problem when I renewed my NP. To make things short, I am 'ready' to go to my friend's wedding in Europe. But, back in my mind, I have to admit it that I am so, very extremely worried about coming back to the US after visiting my friend in Europe. Would I face a problem coming back?? What kinds of questions do you think they would ask me?? Frankly speaking, I am not going (not even planning) to travel to the country where I claimed the persecution from. I got a letter from DHIS the other day that they cannot expedite my RP application due to a weak reason (not extremely important one). So, any advice you can share with me?? If you were me, would you still go traveling or not?? Thank you so much for your time to read this and of course, your advice.

Ok to go!

I just came back a few weeks ago from the Uk with my NP and my GC and they didn't asked me anything, I think, everything depends of the IO at the POE, just go and enjoy your wedding...and tell us your experience when you come back!

Where was the part one? And if I would going to interview you, I'll say yes you can renew your Passport. If you are proud, why you came here?
You can ask the question once form yourself.

Not all asylees have their status because of political resons againts their goverment. Don't you know that you can get asylum because you have a diferent way of life, for example if you are gay, or have a diferent religion, or if your life is in risk, but not from political resons but any other ones like guerrillas or if you are discriminated by your skin color or way of thinking.

It's not always againts your country or goverment. Asylums are valid if your life is in risk, no matter what.

You are ok. Did you get schegen visa? As long as you have a valid GC you are ok.

Just remember that the POE officers only care that you have a valid document to enter U.S & you are admissable(not a criminal etc). They dont go into details as to who has RP or RTD Or NP....That comes at a later time when you go for your citizenship. That is also depending on some circumstances and not every ex-asylee is grilled for visitng COP Unless its fairly obvious he has defrauded the government.

Just chill and enjoy your trip. When you do get your RTD, I would suggest you send it back since traveling on a NP and then RTD is contradictory. If you go on your NP now and then 6 months later go on a RTD, the officer may ask you why you want a RTD when you used NP in the past....Just be careful of details....If you want to use NP, use NP from now on, dont switch back and forth.

Colombian PR
No doubt! I was just joking. This kind of questions will remain without an answer. It is a personal issue. Someone feels bad about the home country and some people love the place for any reasons.
Whether the officer will give them a hard time by interview time or not, is not something that we can make decision over it.
Sorry for mis-representing.

:)

You are right!!!!. We as civilians can't answer this question. It depends on the immigration officer that welcomes you back.

I wish there was a definite answer to the question of visiting COP.i'm a LPR who got his GC thru asylum...it's been over 8 years since i left my country to the US,and my case was not against the government of my country. My parents are getting old and they are not in that great of a health and i really wish i could see them, yet i'm afraid of visiting my COP due to all the horror stories about ex-asylees visiting COP:( !

I'm seriously considering going to my COP next summer tho,and i dont know what to do and what is the best and safest way to do it.I never renewed my NP and don't know if it's ok to do so?!!
Any feedback/advice is greatly appreciated.

NYCancer,

I have researched this topic and you don't have any problem as long as you a LPR. I will tell you something right now, when i did my Asylum interview in 2005, AO asked me where did i renew my NP and i replied back that i renewed with the NY Consulate and she said ok no problem.
Alternatively, go to a third country and then head down to u COP.

chefe, thanx for the reply, but the issue here is renewing my NP,as mine expired loooong time ago.even if i go through a third country i would still need a valid NP to enetr my COP.I dont wanna lie on my citizinship IV,and the thing that worrys me the most is what will happened when questioned about renewing my NP!

one more thing..i always hear about people saying that they visit their COP thru a third country..i dont get the point of it if you still need a valid NP to enetr your COP and it will be stamped, what is the advantage of doing so(since you will have to bring your NP to your citizinship IV)?!!
can somebody clarify?
thanks

NYCancer,

You can renew your NP and go where ever you want to go. You are no longer an asylee . You are not a US citizen yet so you still remain a COP citizen. Not all third countries stamp passport, do a research about your neighboring countries and you will see. Some use train and car to travel from one country to another. RELAX AND BE CALM
