when exactly is this FBI name check involved in the CP process? I'm sorry I'm asking so many Qs; we've just decided to switch and have tons of questions.
With CP, is there the danger of being kept abroad for random security check, as it can happen with H1Bs???

Checking the background of the person who applied for an
immigrant visa has been part of the whole process all along.
However the whole process being in evolution this check was
taking palce at different stages of the process. Sometime back
I read that it was taking place as part of I-140 approval.
Now it seems the consulate is conducting this check (?) before
a visa is issued.
I believe the name checking process would be the same whether
it is CP process or AOS. Read the article on FBI Name check and
you will know the details.
The only difference between the CP and AOS processes is with
the former you need to wait outside US till the clearance comes

It is possible, but a remote one.
My opinion is, one should not shy away from the cp process for
this. Read the article on the FBI Name check and you would realize that getting a 'hit' on one's name does not happen so often.
If you have confidence in your background then even IF (this is a big if) there is an initial 'hit' , your name would be cleared by the subsequent process.
Factors that influence are things like
how common is your name? and so on.
