Hi,
Could anyone reply if you know the answer for the below.
I am changing my last name to my spouse's first name.
Once I receive Naturailization certificate, do I have to first apply for U.S. passport or goto SSN office to change my last name ? For both U.S. passport and SSN card, I need to submit the Naturalization Certificate. I am not sure which one need to be done first.Could anyone who changed their names, pls. shed some light on thid for me please.

Thanks,

Tmmet

I did some research on this I have a similiar situation. you go to civil court $65 fee and you bring a birth certificate and state ID/drivers license. they will tell you there how long it will take to be changed. you dont need to make a passport first take your certificate.

tmmet, Can you clarify further?

Have u changed ur name already during ur Naturalization process?

If so, the order depends on your priority. I am in the same boat. Even though I need my passport asap (for Indian Visa), I am going to do my SSN (and then DMV) first and then apply for passport. IMO, they receive higher priority and also, since I dont neet to part with Naturalization Certificate to complete those processes (i think!!!). However, its quite common to go for Passport first and take care of the rest next.

You are required to change names in those organizations by law, however law didnt specify the order. So you have some space to manouver here.

Just curious, are you sure u r changing ur last name to ur spouse's first name (or is it last name)?

Apparently you haven't done the oath yet. So there is still a chance of getting your name change done as part of the naturalization process, and that will result in your new name going on the certificate and into USCIS databases. If you have not done the interview yet, you can tell the IO about the name change at the interview. If you have already done your interview, I don't know what the process is, but it probably will result in delaying the oath.

The cost and documents required for doing a name change post-naturalization is specific to each local jurisdiction. The OP needs to research the applicable process and costs where the OP lives, if it is too late to do the name change in the naturalization process.

Name change after naturalization

Hi tmmet,
Have you figured out what to do? Maybe I am an the similar circumstance.
I have to take the oath in a couple weeks. I want to change the name in court after the naturalization with fee. What's the next step to take before to apply for the passport? Could it be a problem to change the name soon after the naturalization?
Please reply. Thanks much!
