name change

Hello all,

I checked the option on N-400 form to change my name when getting the citizenship. When I went for a US Citizenship interview in Newark, NJ they verified that this is the name I want to change to but did not give me any paperwork for a name change, just the certificate.
Now in order to change my social security card, social security office is asking me for a paperwork regarding my name change. Without it, they are saying they can't giv eme a new card with my new name. I already received my US Passport with the new name but that is not sufficient for them, they are asking for a court order form for a name change.

Did anyone have a similar problem and how did you resolve it?
Any suggestions?

Social Security have a bunch of morons that like to do nothing better than give us a hard time.

Recently i got married. I took my marriage certificate to change my name. They said my marriage certificate was not enough evidence of my new name. Can you imagine that? They said i had to change my licence first. i had to go to the dmv to change my licence first. Well, dmv changed my licence. I went back to Social security. It's been more than three weeks and i have yet to recieve my new social security card. So now, i am stuck with my licenced changed but i cannot change anything else until they send my new card. Nice.

I did not check the option for name change. But by mistake my husband's first name was my last name in the passport and all US papers. The IO said that was not right and changed my last name to my husband's last name and retained my then last name as my middle name.

They issued the certificate with the new name, no other papers. At that time I did not think great about it and accepted it. But later realized that everyone on this board were talking about court papers.

Anywayz, I was able to change my social secuirty card to the new name with the certificate, I did not face any problems. Changed my name in office with passport. But I realized changing in all other relevant documents is becoming more and more difficult.

Isn't the Natz certf itself the name change doc which can be used instead of the court papers?
Shadow did you show the natz certf to SS office? I suggest you try another office in the area. There is a lot of inconsistent service in ss offices. Another officer may accept your docs.

aabbcc, yes, I showed the natz certif and they still requested the documentation of my name change. I was thinking of going to the same SS office again in hope of getting another person to help me but after speaking to SS office on the phone, faced with the same problem, so decided not to waste my time going there.

Here is continuation of my saga:
This morning, called department of homeland security, which as I figured issued certificate of naturalization, they could not help me but pointed me to infopass on http://www.uscis.gov/ which is a tool that let's you get your answers answered online or schedule an appointment with naturalization officer.
Turned out I was lucky, because the closest appointment was in an hour and my work schedule was flexible enough to allow me to go there. So upon arriving there and standing for about 20 minutes in line and listening to other peoples problems (there were about 4 windows accepting people) this lady told me that they have nothing to do with it and sent me to District Court, which was across the street.
So I went to the US District Court and let me tell you, the process there is so much easier and people are so much more helpful.
After speaking with people and showing them my Driver license and certificate of naturalization, the lady told me to sit down while she contacts the immigration by phone, they are faxing her proof and then boom, done, she will give me the papers.
Turns out I wasn't as lucky as I thought before. When they issued my certificate of naturalization, they never put my old name in, so they do not have proof that my name was changed, as far as they are concerned, I had the same name!
So the lady asked me if I had another passport with an alien number that would match to the one on the certif of naturalization. And it seems like I have the old passport, I am going to get it to her tomorrow morning and hopefully get documentation proofing my name change, after which I will have to SS office again and apply for a new card with a new name

(on top of that, they ripped up my old one last time I went there, saying this is not you anymore anyway)

few, that was a long post.

Thanks, all

Oh, this is crazy. Thanks for this info. Maybe I could go to district court house and try to get my papers. Though my SSN was changed with my new name, I think it is better to have court papers to prove the same. Thanks Shadow.

Finally got my name change papers today in the US District Court. It took them maybe 15-20 minutes to do them, which was rather fast in my opinion.

So all I have to do is go to SS Office and apply for a new SS card.

If you have name change problems I suggest you go to your closest US District Court, they are soooo much easier to deal with.
