Name Change

Hi,

I have applied my AOS with last name as marriage name but all of my IDs (passport, SSN, Driver's Licence) are in maiden name. To change my IDs in marriage name, I have to change it in my SSN first. But the thing is that, I have overstayed my F1 visa for few months, so will it create problem when I change it now on SSN?

If I don't change it now, will it create any problem in the interview?

I don't think you should have any problems. But you should change your drivers license first (all your need if your marriage certificate) and THEN go and change your SSN card (show them your marriage certificate and new drivers license). That is what we did. :)

I did that thing only. Went to DMV to change my name on Licence but the lady asked me that have I changed my name on SSN. I said No. Then she told me that they cant change it then cos their system won't accept it. But if you suggest me to do that, I cant still go again and try.
 
Change license at DMV first. (show your marriage certificate)
Change SSN at SSA second. (show both marriage certificate and new license)

That should do it.
 
Take a copy of your I-485 Receipt to the Social Security Administration, just in case they ask about the status of your F-1.

You are now legally in the US until your petition is either denied or approved.
 
I went to DMV office for driver's license name change, they did that & asked me to change my SSN name within 72 hours. Then I went to SSN office, the lady told me that she cant change my name on SSN though I showed her my marriage certificate and I-485 receipt. Now I am confused what to do??

well, then - don't. I didn't change the name on DL until after the interview. I did change it on SSN though, while I was still in F-1 status.
 
Just come in, say: I got married, need to change my name on my SSN. Show marriage certificate and show new Drivers License.

If questions asked about immigration status show I-485.

Just try again, if she says she can't... ask to speak to a Supervisor. :p
 
Ok will try going to Berkeley SSN office...its a busy office so may be officers there knw how to handle situation..Will do as you suggest! Have temp. DL with me..

I went to Berkeley SSN office. So the told me that, either I have to do name change after AOS or would have done it before AOS. The lady showed me that system was not taking the change. Also, she advised me to carry my marriage certificate if someone needs my SSN (before name change) and DL at the same time...:P

Oh well, I did not think of that. Yes, if I were you I would have changed it before applying for AOS.

In this case, you already have a piece of ID (your DL) with your new name. You can get your name changed on your SSN after AOS.

Sorry you only got halfway through :p
