Name Change Problem (Vegas)

Hi,

Has anyone experienced a problem obtaining a name change court order after being naturalized? I recently changed my name through naturalization but have never received a court order stating my name change. I really do need the name change court order as soon as possible for a renewal of my I.D. but I don't know what actions to take or who to contact in my area (vegas). I tried contacting the USCIS number but I was having a difficult time getting a hold of a customer service representative because there's no specific number that leads to customer service. Help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you very very much.

I'm guessing that you had a court oath. Contact the court where your oath was administered and explain the situation. In the worst case scenario, you may have to pay a small fee to obtain a replacement name change certificate.

This was definitely a mistake on the part of USCIS. You should have been issued a name change certificate at the oath ceremony.

Yes, I had a court oath ceremony but I had since lost the paper I had which states the court where I had my induction. Isn't the induction only held by district court? Also, a few minutes ago I had contacted the court self help and the woman who answered the phone told me that I had to pay $225 dollars to get a court order, is that correct? I am guessing she thought I was filing for a name change (despite constantly reminding her that I just needed a proof of name change). Can't I just request a court order from the clerk where my induction was held or should I speak with an immigration personnel through infopass regarding this problem?

Yes, the district court normally administers judicial oath ceremonies. As I've mentioned previously, the best way to obtain your name change certificate is by contacting the court directly. You can also make an InfoPass appointment at your local DO, but they'll most likely tell you to contact the court. This is not a serious issue, so I doubt that you'll encounter any difficulties with requesting a replacement.

It certainly sounds that the person with whom you spoke thought that you were referring to applying for a name change. Take your naturalization certificate to the court, show it to the clerk and explain your situation. Make sure that you get a certificate with a raised (embossed) seal. That's what makes it official.

I guess that means I would have to go downtown and speak with the clerk since they don't allow document requests through phone. Thank you very much.

What does it say in your naturalization certificate? Does it say your new name? I guess you can apply for a US passport with the naturalization certificate with the new name and from there keep changing other documents like social security and drivers license.

I think you probably would need to say that you need a court certified copy of the order. It is usually $5 for that additional copy. I mean, you cant change your existing name to your existing name again...
