Name Change During Naturalization

Hello,
I am about to apply for US citizenship. And I am planning to change my last name to my husband's last name. Will this have any impact on the timeline of my application? Will it delay my application in any way? Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It will have no impact on the timeline. In fact changing names during N-400 is the easiest way there is to change a name. That's what my wife did and she had no problems.

It is easy to do it during N-400. It will not have impact on the timeline, only thing is you may have to take it oath in a court, it also depends on your DO.

I changed my last name to my husband's last name. The process was very easy. I had not marked on the N-400 for a name change, but that did not matter. I also took a normal oath.

It can have a minor effect on your timeline. Name changes can only happen during "judicial ceremonies", not "administrative ceremonies". As a result, after your interview is complete (and all the normal land mines have been navigated) you may not get a seat at the next available oath ceremony, you'd have to wait for the next judicial ceremony.

Also, I think someone has said that not all jurisdictions still do name changes.

If someone goes thru a name change during the naturalization process, do they get a court affidavit or any documentation for the name change. I mean other than the naturalization document itself.

Yes. You will get a court document that will reflect your name change along with your your natz. certificate at the oath ceremony.

This court order should be used to update all your records like driver license, credit cards, bank accounts,SSN etc.

I had my name change during my N400 and took my oath in an administrative ceremony on March 13 at Atlanta DO. I changed my name in SSN (received a new SSN card with new name), applied for Passport and have now applied for my OCI which has been acknowledged with my new name only with the Naturalization certificate. I did not have any court papers.

Basically, I think if you are taking your husband's last name it should not be problem. Infact, when I checked in my office, most of the women (American women), said they just changed their last name after their wedding with the marriage certificate in all the required documents. Most of them did not go thru any judicial procedure.

In my case, I did not face any problem though I only went thru administrative oath ceremony.

If you did not get any court paper indicating your previous name change to your new name, how do you prove the link between the two names?

I did not ask for name change in the application, but the IO said I could take my husband's last name and that naturalization certificate will read my first name, my last name as middle name and my husband's last name as my last name.

When I went to the SSN office, I carried my marriage certificate and my naturalization cert. They only looked at the nat cert. There were no questions.

When I went to the Visa Camp for my Visa, I just had to give them both the passports. I enclosed a copy of the marriage cert. but I donot know if it was required.

I just changed my name in my office to my new name with a copy of the passport. My bank and house documents were changed just with the marriage cert.

I have applied for my OCI now and the acknowledgement shows up with my new name and it is under process.
