Hi guys
I was wondering if I change my name, Do I have to get new citizenship certificate with new name or it is sufficent to submit the old one with court order as a proof of name change if it is nessesery.Common sense says that I should be able to do it this way but just wanted to make sure.
Thanks

Do it when filling your N-400.It's free and fast.

I believe Immigrant66 has already naturalized. It's your choice. As far as I know you can either do the current certificate plus court order or send N-565 to get a new certificate under your new name. Personally I would do N-565 and then I would start changing all documents, passport, drivers license, etcetera. Actually you don't need to wait for the N-565 to do that, don't get me wrong. Please take into account that I haven't had to do any of this. I am just talking out of what I think I've read in earlier posts in the forum.

You are right. I am already naturalized US citizen. my concern is money and honestly I don't want to pay for new naturalization certificate. As you know name change itself cost about $1000 if not more.
Thank you both for replying.

You don't need a new natz certificate. The original certificate combined with the name change document is sufficient. You can use that combination to get a US passport in your new name. But even if you did the name change before naturalization, you'd still need to show the name change document to change your driver's license, Social Security card, and other existing documents.

$1000?:confused::eek: Which state are you in where it is so expensive? I bet you didn't know it would be so expensive until after your natz interview, or you would have done it for free with the naturalization itself.

I was told by court that if I am planning to do it myself(meaning to fill out court documents myself) If there is any problem with it I will lose filling fee which is about 5 hundred and some change and I need to pay another filling fee for the new or correct new application. They are suggesting that to hire family law attorney and I am guessing it will cost way more than $1000 with filling fee and finger print cost.I need to mention that I did look at the court documents and it is complicated and I am sure I will waist my court fee if I do it myself.

No, you don't have to. You pretty much need the certificate only one time, which is when you're applying for a US passport. So since you got the cert already, once you get your name change certificate, include those two when applying for the US passport.

For the rest of the stuff: ID, SS, etc, you can just bring your passport PLUS the name change cert for processing.

I am in the middle of doing this myself, and I specifically asked the IO about this.

Anyone knows why Court asked me to bring a copy of my Credit Report for NAME CHANGE after Citizenship. They said they did get the FBI report card back and set a court date but asked me to bring with me a copy of my Credit Report. I am to go the Friday after this week. Is it routine? I do not have any bad stuff on my Credit Report except behind on my Mortgage which is being modified. Someone shed some light.
