name change after naturalization and n-565

Friends,

I got my Naturalization on April 9th 2007. My name has always been
WILLIAM MANAMOHAN. My F1, H1, Green Card has always been like that. However during Naturalization, the Office saw my Birth Certficate and said that the Naturalization Certficate will be

WILLIAM MANA MOHAN (with the space ]/i]). I tried to explain to ther that there is NOT a space but could not do anything. I was asked if I wanted a name change but I was in a confused state and said NO.

Now the Certificate of Naturalization has my name as
WILLIAM MANA MOHANI also applied for PassPort and got it with the modified name.

I read that I can get my name offically changed here in GA in front of a judge in the court house. It takes about 5 weeks. I plan to to do that.

Later I can get my PP changed with the court decree and original PP. This process takes about 2 to 3 months or even shorter.

However, the Certificate of Naturalization has to be changed and to do that I need to use form N-565. This takes like a year to get it.

Anyone had experience with N-565 ?

Any problems in travelling ?

Savithari,

Did you get an answer to your question? I am also in the same situation. Did you end up filing N565? how long did it take? How did you change the name in other docs e.g OCI, passport..etc ? Thanks for the information.

Sorry to hear this...i think you made a big mistake....by not requesting to name change to the version you wanted during the interview...The train is gone now...it is late to complain about...

Now you have to spend your own money and resources to get the name change via your state in state court...I think each state has own rules.

I THINK you have 3 choices:

1) ADOPT modified name as it appears on Natz. Certificate for PP and other offical business needs..do no further update and changes
OR
2) Temporarily ADOPT modified name as it appears on Natz. Certificate for PP and other offical business needs...then persue name change..and update Certificate /documents ...eventually passport
OR
3) HOLD for obtaining US Passport/etc and proceed with name change including applying for a new -modified N-565. Yes, this may take a year....or more ..depending on processing time..

Does anyone have any updated steps for name changes in the san jose,ca DO? Have things changed?

san jose district doesn't allow name change at naturalization anymore. it's been over 5 years since they have stopped name change service. you have to go to the court in san jose by hedding to request a name change.
