Name change after GC

Recently received GC , yet to receive plastic card?.
I would like to change/correct my name. Can any body shed some light on this procedure.Should I initiate this from India or US?
I am Planning to trip to india shortly.

I spoke with my GC lawyers but they said I would have to contact
different lawyer for this.

Can any one advice good lawyer and let me know how long this could take.

You can do this @ Indian Consulate.
But for that to happen, you will need to publish two ads in two newspapers, one in INDIA and one in USA where you live.

USA newspaper usually do not publish the ad unless you get a court order for name change.. so you might have to approach your local court for that.

You didn't state the reason for name change.

If because of marriage, its a simple process. Apply for a fresh passport at the Indian Consulate with the application filled with the new last name.

Docs to be attached:
- Marriage Certificate (in original! Have no clue why they insist on the original)
- Spouse's passport (not the photocppy!)
- Application & fee
- Pictures

The new passport will have the same expiration date mentioned in the current one ' cause its only a name change.

With the new passport, the SSN and GC can be changed.
