Hello everyone.


I recently had my oath and received my citizenship.
my son is under 18 (17.5) and they told me to file a n600 for him.

I was wondering, I wanted to change his name, can I do it using this form?

No you cannot. The form does not allow for name changes. Therefore, I would suggest you go through the regular process - follow your cities' process for name change. Then once approved, simply include a certified copy of your son's name change along with the other required documents for the N-600. There is no need to renew the green card since your son became a US citizen the day you were naturalized. Note: On the N-600 you would enter your son's new name under the Question 1 and his old name as it appears on his green card under Question 2.

You can also apply for a passport for your son while waiting for the N-600 process to complete. You should also wait until the name change has been completed to apply for the passport as you will need the decree. In addition, you will need to provide your proof of citizenship.
 
On hindsight it seems it would have been better for you to apply for a legal change of name for your son a while back, so now he would be ready to apply for passport and N-600.
 
but he might already be 18 by the time I am ready for the N600. SHould I get his passport, then get his name change then file the N600 and new passport?
I was going to wait to change his name until he was 18 because it's that much easier.

Let me chime in :) I guess when you say the clock stopped you mean that the kid is already a citizen. That's right. The kid is already a citizen, now it depends on how you want to spend your money. Perhaps if money is not an issue you can start with applying for a passport for him. At least that way he has proof of citizenship while all the other processes for change of name take place.

There is no limit of age for N-600, you can apply before 18 or after 18, after 18 he will apply by himself. N-600 is only to prove citizenship that has already obtained through parents. The fundamental difference between N-400 and N-600 is that N-400 is for granting citizenship to a person and N-600 is to provide proof of citizenship to a person who is already a citizen.

Get the passport ASAP. It's a lot quicker and cheaper than the N-600. Then once the passport is in hand, work on the name change and N-600. Or after that first passport leave the rest up to him, as he'll soon be 18 and can legally decide for himself if/when to change his name and if/when to get an N-600.
