N600 - Certificate of Citizenship

Please post your experience obtaining the Certificate of Citizenship for Children by filing N600. Do post the following information:
1. Date of filing
2. Date of approval
3. Date of naturalization
4. INS office where filed
5. Child in the US or outside
 
I am curious as to why one needs a certificate of citizenship. As nearly as I can tell, anyone who is eligible to apply for this certificate is also eligible to apply for a US passport and I am yet to find someone who will accept the former as proof of US citizenship but not the latter. I have heard that the INS takes anywhere from 6 months to 2+ years to process N600 applications whereas the state department issues passports in about a month.
