Hi- Im planning on filing N400 when I qualify in Oct ( became LPR in 2019). While preparing to review the form I see there is a question that asks whether you have EVER registered to vote or voted. Based on other threads from forums I contacted the elections office and discovered that the DMV had registered me to vote back in 2012 (before I became LPR) and then unregistered in 2018. They provided me with the dates of registration and cancellation, and a copy of the application form which clearly shows the question “Are you a US citizen” was marked as NO. There is another letter they provided that shows I also never voted. Based on the discussions in the threads/forums Im assuming this is going to help as it shows there was never a false claim to citizenship. Please tell me if Im mistaken, or if I will need anything more.
Now in the form N400 I would like to know how I should respond to the response to the question “ Have you EVER registered to vote or voted…”. Im thinking NO because I never went out of my way to register and the documentation shows I never claimed to be a US citizen. I plan to provide the proof as attachment to the n400 in additional documents. Is this the best way?
Will this be an issue as it occurred prior to LPR status even though I have proof from the elections office I NEVER claimed to be a us citizen and NEVER voted?
As far as I can remember I didnt check any voter database for my name before because I know I always said no to voter registration. Im wondering if the IO will ask why I havent unregistered from 2012 to 2018. Honestly I didnt know but I have no way to prove other than that I never intented to register in the first place, never voted and I dont have any other tickets etc. please tell me if Im overthinking.
Im not sure if I should hire a lawyer. Please advice.
Thank you all in advance.
