N400: Selective Service

n400.2010

Registered Users (C)
Hello,

I understand that a Male has to register for Selective service if he gets GC between 18 -25 yrs of age.

I got my GC when I was 32 years old. I had visited US for 4 weeks on L1 when I was 23 yrs old, 8 weeks on B1 when I was 24 yrs and finally came on H1B when I was 25 yrs old.

Since I was 32 yrs old when I got my GC, I didn't register for Selective service. I'm almost 37yrs11months old now.

My understanding is that I'm exempted from this requirement (Sel Service). Question is "Do I need to get any letter from SSS dept for this?"
I didn't even know that I had to register when I entered US on L1 or B1 or H1B (when I was under 25 yrs)....so, do I need a notarized letter or something for N400 interview?

Thanks a lot.

no need to worry about this issue. USCIS will see the date your green card was issued, so just check NO in the answer sheet.

Al,

Is it the GC approval date that is considered for immigration status or the H1-B visa start date?

Please let me know if you had to use the GC date to decide on this question.

thanks,

What does H1B have to do with the Selective Service? On their website they say it very clearly that lawful non-immigrants do not have to register. Why do people complicate things unnecessarily?

The GC date is what gives you the immigration status in the US. H1B is a dual intent visa, but a green card is NOT guaranteed because this is the initiative taken by the employer to sponsor you for a GC. For selective service purposes, H1B visa time is irrelevant. For example, if you were 25 yrs and turning 26 years on Sept 30th, 2010, but your green card approved on Sept 1, 2010. You are required to register before turning 26 years. In this illustration, you have 29 days to register online.
