I am posting these questions for my friend.
My friend is going back home. Already bought his ticket. Today he got interview letter for his N400 application on Sep 5th 2008.

Can any one please answer his questions: (He is very confused)

Question 1.
Will interview / Test and Oath be on same day?

Question 2.
If only interview & Test, Will Immigration officer take his Green Card back.

Question 3
Can he travel after Interview and citizenship test & Oath and apply for his Passport after he come back to USA.

Question 1.
Will interview / Test and Oath be on same day?

This depends on the office where he is having his interview and whether or not his application is approved, denied, or continued.

Question 2.
If only interview & Test, Will Immigration officer take his Green Card back.

No.

Question 3
Can he travel after Interview and citizenship test & Oath and apply for his Passport after he come back to USA.[/QUOTE]

He can only apply for a US passport if he is a US citizen. However, I think wha you are trying to ask is whether or not he can travel abroad after his interview but before the oath if the interview and oath are not on the same day and if his case is approved. In this case, the answer is yes, he can travel abroad between the interview and the oath.

Just to add to response from vdostoi1, if he has the interview/test/oath, then his green card will be taken away but he should be make sure that he can enter/leave the foreign country without a US passport because he can enter US with a naturalization certificate though it is always good to have a US passport.

The green card is surrendered at the oath. A naturalization certificate only allows land and sea travel, not air travel.

Question 1
It is up to the interview officer.

Question 2
actually, not until oath takes place.

Question 3
You can travel if you are driving to Canada, Bermuda, Caribbean, and Mexico with naturalization certificate and Id card such as driver license until next year. Note: passport will be required next year at any port including land port, seaport, and airport even spaceport (NASA site, spaceshipone site) in arizona/nevada/california/florida :) -- no certificate will be accepted next year.

For international, you will need a passport now.
