N400 case status changes, need help~

Hello everybody, I am new to the forum and have an urgent question. I filed my N400 in late January of 2011 and then received fingerprints notice in early February. Since then I haven't gotten anything from USCIS except for a yellow letter asking for government IDs if scheduled for an interview. So it's been a year and a half, and I called the USCIS couple times but didn't seem to help. One time I got transferred to another facility and the lady there told me the only problem I had was my name check, as soon as that's cleared I will be scheduled for an interview. And Finally on July 30, 2012, the case status has updated from initial review to interview/testing, and I got an email saying that I am now in line to be scheduled for interview. I was happy until last night, when I got another email indicating that my case status was shifted back to initial review, and they sent out another fingerprint request and will initiate background checks. I almost cried at that point. Does anyone know what's going on there? I called the USCIS today and the lady wasn't helpful, she just said do whatever they told you to do. I really hoped that it was a clerical mistake, and they really sent the interview notice  But does anyone have experience with this? Why do I need to take my fingerprints again?

Thanks for your patience for reading this and I really appreciate it.

I guess, your fingerprints expired. You'll be fine after they take new fingerprints. It's 2 different processes - name check and fingerprint check. The second one is fast but the result expires in a year and half.

Thank you for your reply! So I guess I should be scheduled for the interview very soon after I took my fingerprints? I really hope that they are two processes, cuz the name check has delayed my application and I don't want to go through that again.

As I recall, the FP results are valid for 15 months. So your old FP results have expired and you have to do a second FP before they can schedule you for an interview. From what I understand, you won't have to go through another FBI Name Check.

I suggest that as soon as you receive the second FP notice, you go for an early walk-in FP right away and don't wait until the actual appointment date that will be given in the second FP notice. As a practical matter, all the ASCs appear to allow early walk-in fingerprinting with no explanation required. Just hand in your FP appointment notice when you get there and don't try to explain anything. The sooner you get done with the second FP, the sooner your naturalization interview can be scheduled.
