N600 is for an individual to document U.S. citizenship status based on citizen parentage. You would not need N600 if you become naturalized, but you would need to file N600 for your minor children to get them certificates. After about 2000 they are automatically US citizens based on your naturalization, so the N600 is simply to get them a certificate. Probably a good idea in case they change the law again.
