Does anyone have experience of how they inform you to come to the US for the obligatory interview for the N-600K application and what happens after the interview?
I am applying for US citizenship for my adopted, now teenage daughter. We live in Sweden, so we must travel to the US for the interview, then return home. I filed the papers in January and asked for an appointment date of 23 July. Here is the series of events since then:
I called the 1-800 USCIS number in May: call back in a month they said. "The processing time is 5 months and we do not even begin to check until 5 months has gone by."
I called back in July: someone will contact you in 10 days, they said.
After 10 days I called back again. "Someone will contact you in 15 days."
After 15 more days: well, by now it is 23 July and I still have heard nothing, so I scan a LETTER, send it to my sister in the US and ask her to mail it (because this is much faster than the 7-10 days it takes to send a letter from Sweden.)
On 31 July, I get an EMAIL (the first email contact I have had from them) saying that my daughter had an appointment that very DAY (i.e., 31 July) but as we did not come, they unilaterally rebooked it for 3 August. Well, we missed that too because, as my email messaging service told them "I am out of the office until 6 August and cannot read my email until then." I was on vacation from 30 July to 3 August because if I didn't take out vacation, I would lose it and I was tired of waiting and waiting for a notice from the USCIS that never seemed to come.
So I immediately called USCIS 1-800 number and explained that I have NEVER received anything, by email or post, that I had an appointment on 31 July. They emailed back that I would get a new appointment and it would be sent by postal service to SWEDEN. So I am VERY LUCKY that they let me reschedule, but now we are back where I started!!! I have come home EVERY DAY for the last two months, looking for a letter that a) might be lost; b) might come well after the day for the appointment; or c) might not be correctly addressed or who knows what.
So I have two questions:
1. How is the USCIS suppose to notify you of the date to come for your appointment? How much advance notice do they give you? What happens if they lose your letter? I assume they are not sending it by registered mail. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY LETTER AT ALL regarding a 31 July appointment, but how can I prove it? How do I know the next letter will get here? They could be using a wrong address, although I have written it and read it to them on the phone many times. (For all I know they could be mixing up Sweden and Switzerland, who knows?)
2. But what happens after the appointment? Does the interviewer give us an approval at the time of the interview Does my daughter then have to go to some naturalization ceremony? Can she go apply for a US passport immediately after the meeting?
If anyone can share their experience of N-600K and what to expect, I will be grateful.
