N-600 Status Update

N-600 was received by USCIS and the cheque was cashed in late January. I know the normal processing time is around 5-6 months, but is it possible to be given a clear status update through an infopass appointment? Or am I better off waiting for that until the actual 5 months has passed?

It would be more productive to check your local office's N-600 processing time on the website and call the 800# and ask where the A-file is. If the file has reached the local office, that is a good sign, if not then an infopass might be worthwhile to get them to order it.

So, if the application hasn't reached the local office I can schedule an infopass. At this meeting I'll be able to get them to order it? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but how does scheduling an appointment to speak with an officer help get the file to the local office? Thanks for your help.

You do misunderstand.

UNLESS you live in Maryland and filed the N-600 at VSC, THEN you filed the N-600 at the local office. The local office can't adjudicate it without the A-file which was likely at the National Records Center in Missouri.

You just need to find out if the A-file got sent to the local office as a first step. They can't adjudicate it without the A-file. If you can find out over the phone that the A-file is physically located locally or if it is determined to be in transit to the local office, then progress is being made and just rely on the posted processing times before inquiring via an infopass. BUT if they have not even ordered the A-file yet---make a stink about the slow processing. It was filed in January and it is now April.
