Hi, I became US citizen this June. I have applied greencard for my wife and her son (under 14 years old). Now they received interview letter for interview on September 20. Assume everything goes well, they will get greencard after interview. I have question regarding citizenship application for my stepson. I heard that if a child under 18 years old and have permanent resident card in US, he is qualified to apply for citizen using N-600 form. Is that correct? I check N-600 form instruction. It seems N-600 don't apply for stepchild. Please advise if he can apply for citizen or not after he gets greencard.

Thanks.

How has everything on your case?

I think step-children of U.S. citizens do not automatically derive U.S. citizenship under the Child Citizenship Act. You can look up the details at:

My understanding is that your step-son would have to either wait five years after getting a green card and submit an N-400 then, or you would need to legally adopt him and have the adoption finalized before he turns 18.

Derivative citizenship is not conferred to stepchildren, unless they are legally adopted by the citizen stepparent before age 16 (age 18 with the sibling exception). But if his mother naturalizes before he is 18, he could get derivative citizenship through her.
