N-400 eligibility using time from previously abandoned green card

I used to have a GC years ago. At some point while living outside the US I voluntarily gave up my GC at the us consulate.
In 2008 I came back to the US on a L1 work visa and in 2010 I obtained a new GC by adjustment of status. In January 2013 I'll be residing in the US for five consecutive years.
On the N 400 form it asks if I've been a permanent resident for at least 5 years - and as I've been a permanent resident before as well as now, I can answer in the affirmative. I can also provide proof that I've been here for 5 years.

Does this mean I can be eligible for citizenship come January?
Is it worth while for me to apply?
Any downsides to applying?

What is the "Permanent resident Since Date" on your current (valid) green card?

You need to be a permanent resident for the past 5 years continuously to be eligible for citizenship under the 5-year rule.

However, for the English test exemption which they require being a permanent resident for 15 or 20 years depending on your age, I remember somebody on this forum whose parent was able to qualify for it using years from a previously abandoned green card to add up to the required 15 or 20 years.
