N-400 Denied due to error on the USCIS part

Friends - My N-400 was denied for the reason of Poor Moral Character ( False Testimony) as they claim I did not mention about a 2nd arrest which never happened.

I was arrested in May 2001 for a simple assault and the case was dismissed and I disclosed this in every document and in the interview too. In the Denial notice, they mentioned that I got arrested again for a simple assault in May 2005 ( which is bull****). Anyways I got confirmation from the Dept. of Safety from the specific state that there was one arrest and the 2nd one never happened.

I appplied for my N-400 in July 2009 and interviewed in November 2009 and got the denial notice on Dec 30 2009. Now where I prbably made a mistake was not hiring a lawyer. I was so enraged to see the denial that I got the corresponding paperwork and filed the N-336 (Request for hearing) myself in Jan 2010.

Since then I have not heard anything from USCIS though they cashed my 605$ check( which Im really mad about paying as this is a clear blunder on their part). Anyways does anyone have suggestions for me at this stage? I appreciate all your time and help and wish you the very best in your cases.

Have you followed up with an Infopass recently? Also, have you requested to see a record of your May 2005 arrest their system shows?

I believe by law the are supposed to render decision within 180 days of filing appeal.

Would you suggest that I hire a lawyer now?

Did you have the naturalization interview already, or did they deny without interview?
what state are you in?
