I was not able to find all the info about q8 in part 10. It says you need to attach a separate explanation if you answer any of the questions yes.

I am a church member, member of the parent teacher organization, NRA, AAA member etc. Not sure what others put down on the separate sheet or should include one at all.

Anybody can help with that?

The question is to determine if you belonged to any organizations that have links to terrorism or that would otherwise make you ineligible for naturalization. AAA, NRA and most church memberships do not fit under that category and can safely be excluded from disclosure.

Bobysmyth,
Based on the question "Are you a member of any organization, association etc.", is it safe to assume that the question is referring to a "terrorist" organization only and not to any professional, social or other type of organization/association?

How about mentioning "IEEE" (Institue of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) which is a professional organization and "AAA" ("American Automobile Association") which is an automobile association? Just to be on safe side, would there be any negative impact if I mention the names of IEEE, AAA etc. in the answer to this question?

Thanks !!

You can mention all those organizations but expect delays as USCIS tries to find out what those groups do. All techies know what IEEE is..but for USCIS, it doesn't matter whether the person looking at your N-400 knows or not..they go by the rules..and will try to go thro' proper channels to find out what those organizations do...are they tied to any terrorist orgs...etc...

If one wants to include IEEE, Parent Teacher Org, AAA, Sams/Costco Club memberships , then they may have to include membership in this immigrationportal.com or yahoo groups forums also . :D :D :D

During the interview the IO will go over the question and specifically ask you about any groups you disclose. It doesn't add any delays to your application since they aren't used as part of background check process. Also, many associations may have the same abbreviation, so it can't automatically be assumed that AAA stands for American Automobile Association and not American Aryan Assembly.

The IO will ask the applicant what IEEE stands for..a professional association, just like they would ask applicant what PLO stands for instead of assuming its the Palestine Liberation Organization and not the Plumbers Labor Organization. The line of questioning by the IO is used to determine the nature of the organization and if the applicant ever belonged to one that would otherwise make them ineligible for naturalization.

Thanks guys. I think it is safer to disclose the information and spelling out the full name so it will be obvious.

Is it ok NOT to attach any additional explanation to the application? I am really not sure what to explain on these memberships.

No need to add an additional sheet explaining what the association is about as the IO will go over the organizations you disclose on application.
