My son's passport

We got my son's US passport when he was 1 yr old. He is now 5 yrs old. The passport is valid till 2010.
Since he has grown now, his picture looks very different from his current picture. Is there a way to replace the passport to have a new picture .

Maybe someone can tell me how early can one renew passport. Can someone renew it one year before the expiry

you can renew passports a few months b4 it expires. I would not worry abt the change in looks. His still a kid. 2010 is almost here anyways.
