My sister's B1 got rejected, she applied at New Delhi Embassy on 20 Aug. She is MBA, not working and unmarried. Visa officer just asked why she is not working and gave her 214 b.

We were hoping that she being only child of parents in India, will be enough to prove strong ties for returning to India as we are only 2 sibling.

You need to show strong ties to your country. Having your parents there (unless they are sick and depend on her care) are not anywhere near enough evidence. Specially if she is graduated, not working and not married. She has plenty of reasons to immigrate. :p

what are options

That is what we were afraid of. She sure does have plenty of reasons to immigrate but she does not want to immigrate just visit, but how can she convince visa officer? How else can she show strong ties as it is applicant's responsibility to prove nonimmigrant intent. She did show Fixed depost worth 7.5 lacs INR apart from mentioning only child of parents in India.

I think if someone is in situation like this, applying for visa is only time/money wasting, especially for people who do not live near embassy/consulate. We ended up spending approx. 1000$ on air travel, hotel, visa fee etc.

It would be nice if they had application process like UK, where you can apply through mail and if required then only go for interview

Intezaar2005,
Your sister fell victim to 214(b). Being single and from India, the consul probably had decided the verdict even before the interview began. I know it sounds harsh, but those are the ground realities.

It is really hard to convince the VO by just showing property documents of even 100 lakhs, as these can be disposed off remotely. Secondly being single and not-working proves more immigrant intent than a visitor intention to the VOs. There have been 1000's of cases of single women going on visitor visas to get married to LPRs, US citizens, H-1B visa holders etc. The best way for young single women/men to come to the U.S is on Student/Work visas.
