Ok so this is a bit complicated..
We file our taxes jointly of course. We owe some on our federal return which will be paid in full by the time we send the N-400. This was my fault as I didn't have enough coming out of my paychecks; I thought since we just bought a house that I was having enough taken out but I was not.
I am not sure if anyone is aware of the website MTurk it's basically a website run through Amazon where companies can "outsource" work to freelancers online. So last year I had about $6200 in income from MTurk and I also had a few hundred from Amazon Associates (where they pay you a percentage of sales from your links - basically affiliate marketing)
My husband did Mturk as well last year but he is not doing it this year. Last year he only made about $200.
We used an accountant and he reported all income, filled out the appropriate schedules, and we had some deductions, etc. We both have regular jobs as well.
The accountant mentioned that we should "go and register as self-employed with the city" and I am still trying to figure out what he means but I am thinking he means to fill out a "Business Tax Application" because that is the only thing I could find.
I just realized that I think I am supposed to be filing quarterly taxes and I have already missed the deadline of June 15th. I have made about $2,000 so far this year on MTurk.
For 2010 we had a home office and so the accountant deducted 30% of mortgage interest, etc. It was the first year we owned the home so this was a sizable amount. This left us with a taxable self-employment income of around $800 and I believe only about $120 to pay in taxes. This year we are expecting a baby so no more home office it is now going to be a nursery.
(1) Does my husband need to "register as self-employed with the city" as well since he only made $200 last year and is not continuing this year?
(2) What do you think was meant by "register as self-employed with the city"? I have tried to contact my accountant but have not heard back from him yet.
(3) Does it sound like I need to be paying quarterly taxes?
(4) What happens if I don't pay them or I am late?
(5) Can my husband still answer truthfully on his N-400 that he does not owe taxes and has never been late on his taxes? Or does my quarterly taxes create a mess..
