My NPs are stolen-What should I do?

Both my internal and international passports were stolen from my apartment along with some other staff. I hope they were taken by mistake, because they are expired and practically of no use.

The police told me that I shouldn't be worried as they are expired. I called USCIS, and IO told me that as long as I don't apply for a new passport I am fine.

I hear that even expired passports can be used in some way.
I wonder if somebody can renew my passport at the Russian Embassy without me knowing it, can somebody steal my identity this way?

Inform the embassy that the passports were stolen.

Identity theft happens a lot. I was a victim not too long ago. Your passports have enough information for the crooks to "do business".

Here is what you need to do. You should call one of the credit bureaus and place a temporary "fraud alert" on your file. What this does is that whenever a creditor pulls a file he will get a message asking him to call you first to verify that the applicant is really you. The alert lasts for 90 days. After that you can send the credit bureau a police report and they will extend the alert to seven years.

If you want to you can also buy a credit monitoring service online. The service provider will send you an email message within 24 hours of anyone pulling your credit file.

Don't worry abour Russian embassy - It's impossible to do anything there without you been present.

I would inform them though abut a fact of the theft and leave them your contact info - may be some good hearted theft would mail it there.

It's a good idea to contact credit bureaus, I will do that, just in case.

But I'm afraid to contact Russian embassy about it, they may have a lot of questions, I am an asylee with I-485 pending, though it's good to know that I must be present to apply for a renewal, in USA everything is done by mail.

Is it safe to inform the embassy about the theft, can they contact USCIS?
