I would like to post my experience about my entire experience all the way from putting in my application for permanent residence to landing in canada.
The whole process took roughly 18 months for me ( including my laziness in between
)
Here are some important tips:
1)While putting in your application, ensure that you do not leave any row blank. If you do not have any info to fill, put N/A.
eg: For ''Any military experience" , put N/A
2) Ensure that your photos are 100% accurate as per the specs mentioned in the application guide.
3) You may give the address for which future correspondence needs to be sent as your permanent address/parent's address in your home country ( if you are a legal resident/alien in the US but have a citizenship from another country).
4)Make sure you sign the application before you mail it in.
5) When you receive your Passport request (PPR) and if you are not in the US anymore and have gone back to your home country, make sure that you do not send a bankers cheque from any non U.S Bank. Try and see if your friend can send in a US Banker's cheque to the canadian consulate quoting your file/case number.
6) If you are worrying whether you are safe in sending your passport over international courier to U.S (If you are like me wherein you received the PPR while you are in India and are outside the US), Pls use Indian Speed post (EMS speed post) as it is more safe and customs will not bother scanning Government owned speed post courier baggages.
7) Make sure that you write your name, case number and Date of birth on the back of the photographs that you will send along with your passport (for the PPR). Make sure that you clip the photos along with your passport as otherwise the canadian consulate will lose the photos and will ask you for photographs thereby slowing the process for you.
8) My experience with my landing at the POE was excellent. I drove a rental car and presented my passport and COPR to the officer. They were extra nice and asked me some questions as to how much money I was carrying and how much money i plan to bring in the future. He did not want to see my bank statement or proof of funds. He even gladly took my address in canada (even though It was my friend's address and i was not going to stay there and i was going to make a turn back to the US after my landing; of course I did not tell the officer all of the above, I just gave him the the address in canada when he asked me for one).
9) I went to the customs desk, they took my Good to follow list, added up the estimated cost of each item, stamped the list and gave me one copy. He was extra nice too. I think the Canadian POE official are the best.
