My approval is a joke!?

Ok, here is the stupidiest situation i could imagine to happen after being approved.

My I-485 was approved on March 9, i've the letter from the local office ( from director, actually) that i can obtain the temporary I-551 stamp card to use instead of actual GC till it arrives. As my drivers license is expiring this wensday i've made infopass appointment in order to get temporary I-551 since my I-94 was taken away during the interview and i don't have any other document as proof of my immigration status. Got it, was explained that i can use it anywhere ( SS office, DMV etc). After i got the card which looks similar to I-94 e.g. picture, A-number, what it means ( permanent resisent) i went staight to my local DMV where i was amused by the officer who said that she's never seen anything like this and i should bring them an actual GC .

I was assumed that something was wrong whoth those people :D and went to another DMV, where i was told again, that they won't exept my document.

I ended up in Trenton DMV with the superviser, who agreed to exept my card, but after he checked my status with USCIS, it turned out that the case status is not updated and even more, there was nothing about my legal situation in the country. The superviser told me that if i got my temp. I-551 just today, it may take them another couple of days in order to update it.

As i said in my spreviouse posts, my online case status didn't change, but i wasn't worried at that time. Now i don't have any immigration document that could be accepted in DMV and i'm kind of freaking out as i need to drive.

I ended up calling USCIS 1-800-number and a surprized representative told that he doesn't see anything that i was approved and i should make another infopass appointment in order to clear up the situation in case it doesn't change by that time. So, i'm having an appointment this thirsday ( the next day my DL expires) and hate those stupid IOs who didn't update my status after taking away my I-94. If the situation doen't clear up during the next week i mught end up loosing my job or paying everything i make to the cab driver just to get there and not to lose it. Wht a joke.

Hi Charlize,
I have similar situation. My I485 was sent to local office and I was scheduled for an interview, in a couple days after the interview I have received a letter stating that my application for adjustment (I485) was approved and actual GC should be expected in about 270 days and while I will be waiting for the actual card I could get my NP stamped with "temporary I551 evidencing permanent residency for one year." I have made an appointment through Info Pass and got my NP stamped.
I also have questioned an IO about why does it take so long (270 days) in order to get the actual GC and was explained that a cases that was physically(!) sent to local offices (not electronically) for interview will going through a "Manual Input": after approval, your case will be physically sent back to one of the main Service Centers like Nebraska or Texas. After the Service Center got it, than they should update (all updates on the web site uscis.gov done from the main four Service Centers not from local offices) and hopefully sent GC.
Your approval is not a joke, at least I don't think so :) Good Luck

In my wife's case, she got her passport stamped on the day of her interview and was told that she will receive a welcome letter within a week and the actual card after two months. After 30 days of her interview we went to apply for an unrestricted SSN card for her and were told that the BCIS system was not updated and it will take 30 days for them to check the status. The SS Administration sent us the card after about 45 days. She received the welcome letter after about 3 months and it was immediately followed (I think the next day) by the green card. I think the application for the SSN was helpful for them to update the BCIS record. The bottom line is that it takes a long time for the BCIS to update their system after they approve a case during an interview. I wonder what would have happened if we had to go out of the country within a few days after her interview and tried to come back with the stamped passport. Anyway, good luck to you. I wish you recieve your card soon.

Mr. Calm dowm. What you have is greencard, and it works, but the officer you met at the DV was not familiar with it. You should have asked for a supervisor or someone with a knowledge. I have seen many cases where individuals were called in for interview at a local USCIS and they were given the same document you are describing. They had to have it for up to two years some of them, but the state where I live they are familiar with all kinds of immigration documents so the immigrant didn't have any problem and their greencards arrived evenjually; bottom line don't panic and just take your time. You have nothing to worry....good luck

I was actually trying to work things out with the superviser, who said that my temprorary I-551 is fine, but the status doesn't show an update. I know i've been approved, but I-551 i have doesn't have any power untill they update the status. The rep on the phone told me that i should receive a welcome notice ( which was asked from me in my local DMV) and that would mean that my sstatus is updated.

It's just for me it is a nonsence, that they would issue a document which means nothing. Why would they give it to me, i wonder. Or why would they it to me and do not update the status?

The DHS databases an external party like the New Jersey DMV can access are just a small set of DHS records. They (DMV) should have filled out a paper request form and sent a copy of your card to the DHS which will verify the authenticity of the document.

I just made some search on theforum and got the instructions how to get to talk to the IO from one of the centers given by user LolaLi:

Quote:
"Seems like you took all the required actions and they keep you going around in circles. I would suggest you call the 1-800 number again, but try to get to the service center instead of a customer service rep. Once you get to the service center, you can ask the Immigration Officer that answers to look into your case. You will need to provide your receipt number and A#. Let them know of the difficulty you have had from the Local Office and Customer Service Reps when trying to figure out what happend to your greencard.

The way to do this is to select the option that says you got a notice of action, and then selecting the option that indicates you do not understand the notice of action. I've provided the steps below:

Exact Steps:
-Dial the number: 1-800-375-5283
-Press 1 for english
-Press 2 to bypass the introduction and go to the main menu
-Press 2 for getting information about medicals
-Press 4 for option about a notice from USCIS requesting more information
-Press 2 for the option that indicates you do not understand the information requested by USCIS and would like further assistance
- At this point the system will ask you if you have a receipt number
-Press 1 to indicate you know your receipt number
-Enter your receipt number and you will be transfered to the service center handling your case (There will be a long message before you are transfered and the recording will tell you are being transfered to a customer service rep, but do not hangup - it will actually trasfer you to the service center. You can verify this by listening to the recorded introduction message you get once you have been transfered; all service centers introduce themselves. For example: "You have reached the Vermont Service Center, ...."

Goodluck and let us know what happens. I've done this multiple times so hopefully you will get through to the service center.

Regards."

The IO told me that the only way to straighten things up is to go to infopass appontment which i have this thirsday and make them update the status of my case right in front of me. This is the only way anybody could see that i was approved. I hope that the IO that i gonna see this week will be nice enough and i won't have to put any pressure on anybody and they will fix everything as it supposed to be.

MGM, they might need to send the phisical paper to the main center, but first they have to update it in a compouter system, at least this what i was told by IO from the center.

Update

I just came from the local office - the IO told that they uptated the info and di all they shold and nothing else could been done from their part. Nebraska servise center must take it from there and update it during 30 days form the date of approval. In case they won't do it on time i should write them a letter, requesting the status update. I'm screwed...

Charlize,

Please calm down. You are not screwed. Those of us who are 'oldies' on this forum went through this process to get our GCs. Back then, there was no fancy welcome letter and there certainly wasn't a 3-day printing of the GC. :) Amazing how things change in a few years.

In either case, you went through the manual process of the GC. This means that they had to take the print of your index finger manual on an I-80 form and attach a picture to the form. This along with your A-File is sent back to Nebraska Service Center or Texas Service Center (depending on who was working your case) - since they are the 'owners' of your process. Once your A-File is received, it will be updated in the NCIS database and the I-80 form will be sent to the printing center where your GC will be printed manual. Meaning someone has to manual enter your information and scan in your signature and fingerprint from that form. This may take any where from 3 - 6 months to get the actual GC.

The electronic process eliminated this manual process for today's applicants. The information is transmitted immediately and electronically when an individual goes in for their biometrics.

Hope this makes sense. Regards.

GREAT LOGICAL EXPLANATION, that what I was trying to explain in my reply.

Everything makes sence, exept for the fact that they give a document, which legaly means nothing, and i don't really have anything else to prove my legal status in the country. I know that i'm approved, and the person who sent me the letter knows it, and the person, who gave me temp. I-551 knows it - that's it, nobody else does.

I've tryed to call 1-800 number a couple of times more, just to find out if this is normal and how long does it take to get the info updated. I'm not freaking out about getting the actual GC, i need them to update the info. The first rep happened to be an arrogant b*tch, and said that i just have to wait without evem telling for how long, after i asked several times how long should it take as there must be some time frame, she kept saying "You just have to wait for indefinite time" and then hang up on me. The second one was much nicer and told me that it should take 2 months from the date of interview to get a GC or at least to get the info updated. I'm sure i'll hear something else when i call once again. My DL has expired and i just don't know whome to fight.

Mr/s. Char...I understand you eagerness, but you are spending time and energy unnecesary thing. Once your are given an approval you are approved. People who you expecting answer from are just people who don't have any information. Your case is in the hands of the officer who approved it. He knows how to deal with, he/she maybe busy at this time, so just give him/her some time. I am pretty sure you will get your plastic card, and remember most of the immigration officers understand the greencard card...so just enjoy life and wait the thing to come through the mail. As I have told you I know individuals who had like your card for years without problem and their card came through the mail. Chill out there and enjoy your new status...no more worry..you already had enough

Thanks for cheering. :) But i have to drive to work 40 miles 1 way and i'm stuck with an expired license. As of today, i broke the law and i drove with expired DL hoping that i won't be pulled over ( i never was, but i do believe in Murphy laws). I would live happily ever after if my I-551 meant something, but it's useless as the info is not updated in the system. All i need is the update, so other establishments could take me as a permanent resident, or at least as being legally in this country. Don't care about the plastic....

Opinion, have you tried to get anywhere with this stamp like to DMV os SS office? Has you online case status changed?

I have no idea in which backward state you live in Charlize. But at the time of my approval, I was living in Virginia and used the temp card to renew my DL, apply for an RTD, apply for I-130, apply for a new SSN, and update my information as a PR in the university's database.

You basically made a valid point when you used the word "fight". You do have to fight for your rights here - thats the beauty of it all - you DO have rights. I suggest you go to the DMV and ask to speak to another supervisor. Have them take a copy of your temp PR card (and your approval letter) and manually request USCIS to confirm your status. If not, they can atleast renew your DL for one year. Get your congressman's office involved.

Ciao -

Not to DMV or SS office, but I brought my stamped NP to work. Since I didn't have GC or Ctzsp, I had to bring all my doc annualy to prove my status. On a list of required documents they have "passport with I155 stamp," so I had no problems. But of course DMV differ from casino.

easy

amigo Charlie, do not worry about DL.
IN All 52 states of the US, after DL expires you have 6 months to renew it and in case you get pull over all the Cop will give you, will be a warning. After 6 months of expiry it will be a Traffic Criminal since it will be assume by them that you have been driving without DL.

SO, calm down, i know how frustrating it dealing with USCIS .
You still have 6 months in order to prove DMV are you a LPR of this country.

Regards.

Guess i should enjoy those 6 months?:D The state of NJ is kind of strickt about all the documents, so i'd better try to fight, because i might get into the situation when i will have to fight for my driving privilage for 6 months.

Case status update.

Today i've received te notice of action via mail ( Notice type: Welcome notice), saying:

"Your application for PR status is being processed. If approved, a PR card will be mailed directly to you from our Immigration Card Facility. If you do not hear from us within 30 days of the date shown on the notice, please, call customer servise at 18003755383."

My online case status(LUD) is the same. The the notice of action has a different receipt number. And when i've put that number i've got the message:
"Application Type: I181, CREATION OF RECORD OF LAWFUL PERMANENT RESIDENCE

Current Status: Case received and pending.

On March 28, 2007, we received this I181 CREATION OF RECORD OF LAWFUL PERMANENT RESIDENCE, and mailed you a notice describing how we will process your case. Please follow any instructions on this notice. We will notify you by mail when we make a decision or if we need something from you. If you move while this case is pending, call customer service. We process cases in the order we receive them. You can use our processing dates to estimate when yours will be done. This case is at our NEBRASKA SERVICE CENTER location. Follow the link below to check processing dates. You can also receive automatic e-mail updates as we process your case. Just follow the link below to register."

So, i guess, something is going on. From this message i can tell that they've received something from the local office( i guess they don't know yet what's the decision, it might be denied as well) and they are letiing me know that they've done it.

Not that i'm looking for any advise no more, but may be somebody will be in the same situation and this info might be usefull.
