You can have as many petitions (I-130) as you want. However, you can only have one 485. When it comes time to apply for 485, you will have an option to withdraw one of those applications. So go ahead and apply through both.

rayman555, You can have two I-485 pending, as long as they are not in a same category and you paid proper fees for each.
In your case one I-485 will be based on I-130 and another on I-140.
At the time of your adjustment (of whatever I-485 comes first) you will withdraw the second application.

My laywer says only one 485 is allowed, whether it is family or employment based. However, I don't know if INS automatically cancels one if you file for another.
