Moving to Singapore

My wife and I have been permanent resident since the last three years and have been in the US except for a month trip to India. I have a very good opportunity to go to Singapore for 3 years.

Can I get advise regarding the following:

a) To keep green card alive do we have to visit US every six months?
b) There is some kind of permit that will allow to stay out for one year. Can anyone advise regarding that?
c) Can I come to the US after 2 years (so that is 5 years on GC has passed), stay for a month or so, apply for Citizenship and then leave for a couple of months and then come back for interview? Do we have to stay for the entire time between application and interview in the US?

Thanks a lot for answers..in advance

you can do that, go and come back every 4, 5 months but they will give you hard time by saying why you are staying abraod, and then they will let you in since you didnt broke the rule.

yes it' s reentry permit but it allow you to stay outside the US only for 2 years without going and coming back every 6 months.

if you apply for the reentry permit and leave for 2 years without coming back, you will need to wait 4 years to apply

if you live and come back every 6 months, you still respecting the law but they may give you hard time by saying that you didnt live in the for long 2 years, and they may say nothing since you respecting the law

dont forget that all time spent abraod has to dont exceed 30 months out of the 5 years.

--after application you have to keep your continuous residency by respecting the 6 months rule, and 30 months rule until the oath

my advice is this:
if you are not in hurry to get citizenship, get reentry permit then u will apply after 4 years when u come back, otherwise forget about singapoore

a) At a minimum you must step foot in US Soil once a year. However if you do it a few times then as some people say you put your GC in jeopardy (abandoning your GC).
b) Reentry Permit lets you stay out of the country for upto 2 years. However there are HUGE backlogs on it now and it takes 15 months to get one now. If you have plans to leave the US for a while apply for a reentry permit NOW. Foreign employment in my opinion is not good grounds for getting a reentry.
c)If you leave for more than 6 months in one streach your Continious Residency is broken. Your prior 3 years will be not counted towards Citizenship. After you return you can file for CZ 4 years and 1 day later.
d) Most importantly, consult an immig lawyer before u leave for long periods

Hi Rahul

i have been in this case by oing to study abraod
what do you think about,

get green card in 1999
12/2001 left abroad to study ---come back 04/2002
left 05/2002-----------come back 10/2002
left 11/2002-----come back 02/2003
left 03/2003---- come back 07/2003
left 10/2003-----come back 03/2004
stayed in the US since that time

whole time outisde 24 months <30 months
no signle trip exceed 6 moths

Looks like you have satisfied requirements to apply for Citizenship. The million dollar question is if the interviewer will be satisfied with this or would he expect more ? What documentation do u have to prove ur trips were
a) temporary
b) went against your interest if not undertaken and can u document pressing circumstances?
c) u did not intend to abandon US/GC
d) u maintained ties to US in periods of absence (rent receipts, bills, tax returns , other family members etc)

Depending on your 'luck' the interviewer may overlook your trips. But be prepared to answer some hard questions. If you can prove to the adjudicator that these trips were absolutely necessary(proof of what u studied and why u could not study it here) and you never inteneded to abandon residency things may work in your favour. Go prepared. Applying with the help of a lawyer is not a bad idea

All the best
